the tower of ba-bell

aka taco bell rpg

The Tower of Ba-Bell is an RPG Maker 2003 game, and a personal project to practice self-indulgence. it is about climbing a tower themed after taco bell and is Full of funny OCs, OCs of friends, and things that i like. generally, if i have an idea that could be funny, and wouldn't absurdly balloon the scope, i add it to my to-do list. here's a link to the itch.io page, and also a few banners if you want to link it on your page!

post-demo development

once the demo was posted, development slowed down substantially. the primary cause has been less time spent on it, due to a change in vocation, as well as conflicting hobbies taking my time, and my mental health reaching dangerous new lows (i’m getting better and taking meds).

another cause of slowdown is that the demo section was all Tutorial, more or less. and so i am getting more complex and silly with the things that i am including on the next set of floors. that said, progress is still being made, and more In Depth devlogs should be coming in the future!

really just putting whatever i want in here tbh

pre-demo development

i pitch a lot of ideas to my friends, and even did a whole podcast about that. idk why this one stuck

like a lot of my silly ideas, this one started as a one off joke to one of my friends. surprisingly, i latched on to this almost immediately?? and also decided that i wanted to play around with RPG Maker 2003. the engine decision was actually Very Straightforward; i wanted something that had fairly strict limitations, so that i couldn’t apply too much scope creep to it.

lucy, gawain, and stew were just sort of designed on the fly, and the limited color scheme decision was endearing enough to me to be applied to all of the Ba-Bell original characters.

with some exclusions, like Dupe, obviously

i should say now, that this game very much is Not persona 3; though the tartarus tower/dark hour connection is still there. there are no social links or day-by-day mechanics or anything. it’s mostly just a straight forward rpg, where the townspaces are in the dungeon itself.

i wanted the party members to exist outside of just, cutscenes and combat. it, uh, didn’t work out as intended, but i think it is charming and silly.

some of these characters are actually old OCs that i reworked! literally, i just had to rename bell beefman and put some cheese on him in order to make him fit in here.

the demo is available on itch, and it has been for like 2 years now. i’ve only just recently learned that there are some issues with it, but hey, i’ll be replacing it soon anyways.
